Email Scams
Some client confusion recently over some official looking emails supposedly from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia has been the catalyst for setting up this section of the website. We will try to keep it updated with all the latest happenings, particularly with scams that have been reported to us by our clients.
Email scam details
Firstly, let me make it very clear that this email is indeed a scam. Do not click any of the links in the email or respond to it.
The email comes in a number of different forms, shown below.
SCAM #1
FROM: Commonwealth Bank <security@onlineupdate.com>
SUBJECT: Important Information regarding your account
Dear Commonwealth Bank customer,
We recently have determined that different computers have logged onto your Online Banking account, and multiple password failures were present before the logons.
We now need you to re-confirm your account information to us.
If this is not completed by May 30, 2009, we will be forced to suspend your account indefinitely, as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes. We thank you for your cooperation in this manner.

SUBJECT: Notification of Limited Account Access!

Your account access has been limited for the following reason(s):
May. 21, 2009: (Error Message No. FE010)
1. We would like to ensure that your account was not accessed by an unauthorized third party.
Because protecting the security of your account is our primary concern, we have limited access to sensitive NetBank account features.
2. Unusual account activity has made it necessary to limit account access until additional verification information can be collected.
3. If your account was hijacked, the bank account attached is vulnerable too. Please respond as soon as possible!

SUBJECT: Account Notice #18201-3
Dear Commonwealth Bank client,
This is your official notification that your maestro card has been limited. We recently reviewed your card and it seems that it is linked to more than 1 accounts. Linking your Maestro Card to multiple multiple accounts is strictly forbidden and it can be punishable by law. You are now requested to provide information relevant to your Maestro Card. Commonwealth Bank will investigate the matter promptly and if the investigation is in your favor, we will restore your account.
